Evaluation of Work Welsh

Arad evaluated the Work Welsh scheme, which provides opportunities to employees to learn Welsh or further develop their Welsh in order to meet the business needs of their employer. The programme involves a series of support services for employers (particularly within the public sector) and employees, including online, intensive and residential courses. The evaluation involved developing an evaluation framework and gathering feedback from a large range of learners and employers to inform the on-going development of the scheme.

Evaluation of Cymraeg for Kids

Arad and Bangor University are currently evaluating the Cymraeg for Kids programme, which aims to increase the number of children in Welsh medium education. Its objectives are to support parents, prospective parents and other family members in introducing and using Welsh at home, transmit Welsh to their children, and to support children’s language development. The evaluation involves the development of a theory of change for the programme, review of monitoring data, research with Cymraeg for Kids delivery and strategic staff, and research with parents attending Cymraeg for Kids activities.

Independent review of Mudiad Meithrin’s funding, structures and activities

Arad undertook a review of the structures and processes Mudiad Meithrin has in place to ensure the organisation is able to support Welsh Government’s strategy of achieving a million Welsh language speakers by 2050. The work included reviewing the various programmes and support activities Mudiad Meithrin has in place to develop the Welsh-medium childcare sector in Wales.

Research into language transmission and use in the family

Arad Research and Cardiff University undertook a piece of research into the conditions which influence the transmission and use of the Welsh language within families. The purpose of the work was to study the factors influencing whether or not parents transmit the language to their children and in what circumstances. Arad undertook a series of 60 qualitative, in-depth interviews with families across Rhondda Cynon Taf, Caerphilly, Gwynedd and Anglesey, gathering data on their history with the language and the way in which it is currently used within the family.

Review of management arrangements for a bilingual workforce

Arad undertook a review of management arrangements for Welsh-language skills in the workforce across the 22 local authorities and 8 health boards and trusts in Wales. The review covered strategic management arrangements, workforce planning and monitoring, recruitment and skills development (including training). Arad undertook consultations with key members of staff at operational and senior strategic level within each authority.

Welsh language in the community research

Arad Research and Bangor University undertook a study into the opportunities available to use Welsh within communities in Wales. In addition, the research involved assessing the influence of Welsh Government strategies to support the social use of the Welsh language and assessing the factors that influence the use of the Welsh language by the public. The research involved conducting a series of focus groups with varied members of the community across Wales to gather their views, experiences and opinions.
